‘YA Studies Around The World’ in Numbers

It’s been three months since YASA’s inaugural conference. Having shared our personal reflections on #YASA2020, we also wanted to share the behind-the-scenes data for the conference. The scale of YA Studies Around the World revealed in this data truly shows the diversity and passion in YA Studies. The conference is not just an achievement for YASA, but a significant contribution to scholarship that proves that our field is thriving.

Length

YA Studies Around the World ran throughout the month of November 2020, with one week of 28 live events as well as 96 pre-recorded papers.

Watching all of our fantastic pre-recorded papers would take 815 minutes, or just over 13 hours.

Watching all live events would take 1,740 minutes, or 29 hours.

YASA2020’s total duration was 42 hours.

Tickets

In total, 617 people registered to attend YA Studies Around the World. Within this total, 24 people registered via “donation” tickets.

The conference’s gross ticket sales amounted to £325. After VAT, the Association received £317.20 from Eventbrite sales.

Two very kind people made direct donations to YASA’s PayPal, totalling £50.

The total conference earnings therefore were £387.20.

Conference Costs

The digital infrastructure to host YASA2020 was not free. Below are all of the costs involved in setting up the conference.

  • Zoom 500 participants meeting (1 month): £48
  • Zoom Webinar 100 (1 month): £38.40
  • Zoom Webinar 500 (1 month): £134.40
  • YASA website (3 years): £91.12
  • Zoom Pro (1 year): £80

Total cost of setting up and running YA Studies Around the World: £391.92.

Thanks to the kindness of those who made direct donations, and purchased donation tickets, the YASA Executive Board approved a partial reimbursement of conference costs totalling £220.80 on 28th November 2020. The remaining money is just short of the £171.12 conference costs that are still yet to be reimbursed.
